A Couple Celebrating 75 Years of Marriage Reveals What's Kept Them Together
Fred and Marjorie Mawby have been head-over-heels for each other since their first (blind!) date nearly 80 years ago. In light of their 75th wedding anniversary on March 29, the couple was asked to share their secret to a long-lasting marriage. Surprisingly, they didn't swear by having alone time or creating inside jokes like many couples do. Instead, Fred and Marjorie wholeheartedly believe their success is due to constant bickering over money.
In fact, Fred says the pair has been arguing about money — both thinking the other spends too much — once a week from the very start of their relationship. In Fred's mind, Marjorie would go shopping too often while he worked as a corporal in the Royal Army Service Corps during World War II. But from Marjorie's point of view, she also helped support Fred and their four daughters by working in a local factory. To this day, the argument still rears its ugly head.
"We've had our issues with the cost of living when we were bringing up our kids, as we had to make sure there was food on the table," Marjorie explained.
Despite having the same exact quarrel for 75 years, Fred and Marjorie believe their weekly arguments are healthy because it allows them to clear the air — which they say is the key to everything.
