10 Exercises That'll Make You Smarter In a Week
Get Smarter In 3 Hours A Week
When you’re trying to sweat yourself slim, most trainers will suggest you hit the gym five days a week (or more) to heed results. But when it comes to sweating yourself smarter, a new study published inFrontiers in Aging Neurosciencefound all you need is an hour of aerobic exercise, three days a week to see improvements in memory, cognitive function, and more.
Researchers from the University of Texas at Dallas placed 18 sedentary, cognitively healthy participants aged 57 to 75 on a light workout regimen of just one hour of aerobic exercise three times a week for 12 weeks. After following up over three months, the active subjects showed significant improvements in both immediate and delayed memory tests, logical memory, and resting cerebral blood flow (with increased physical fitness as an added bonus) as compared to a control group.
“Aerobic exercise is the best-known way to increase memory performance, and the cost is only a pair of athletic shoes,” says lead study author Sandra Bond Chapman, PhD, founder and chief director of the Center for Brain Health at the university.
And you won’t have to wait long to start feeling the effects—while previous studies reported these types of improvements at six months, this study showed regenerative brain and cognitive gains after just six weeks. “This study builds on a body of growing evidence illustrating just how highly malleable the human brain is,” says Dr. Chapman, who used a special, non-invasive type of MRI to detect brain changes earlier than normal. “If we do not properly adopt healthy physical and mental habits, our brains can go backward and lose ground.”
Ready to get started? In order to reap the benefits, be sure the exercise is challenging enough to elevate your heart rate.
