How Hard Should You Be Going At The Gym?

While circuit training and HIIT workouts have changed the way many of us train, it seems that the best workouts are still the ones designed to dismantle our ego and leave us begging for the end.

But is this the most efficient way to hit your fitness goals? One trainer disagrees completely.

Firas Zahabi, head coach at MMA training centre Tristar Gym in Quebec, Canada, has suggested toThe Independentthat, instead of burning ourselves out every day, we should avoid training to the point of soreness.

He explained that, by lifting until your body gives in, you extend the recovery time your body requires, which takes its toll on your training frequency.

There’s evidence to back him up, too. In a study published in theJournal of Applied Physiology, subjects were put on a 16-week training programme with half training to failure and half to non-failure.

At the end of the test period, it was found that those who trained to failure had made greater improvements in their max reps on a bench press test, but their levels of IGF-1 – a protein responsible for stimulating growth through the mediation of our body’s growth hormones – had fallen.

Perhaps that lactic acid-laden badge of honour earned after a particularly heavy leg workout isn’t as much of a bragging point as once thought.

The non-failure group showed an increase in testosterone concentration, a catalyst for anabolic growth, and lowered levels of cortisol – the body’s stress hormone. During the 'peaking' phase of the experiment, they even experienced greater gains in the muscle power output of their lower body. In short, squatting ‘til you drop may not be the best approach.

Zahabi also pointed to the intrinsic effects of training to failure, stating that associating the gym with this complete exhaustion puts you off going back. Training should be a ‘pulling force’, he said, an activity that you enjoy enough to actively want to repeat.
