If you're from the southern part of the United States, you know that sweet tea is a staple. Though most teas have beneficial nutrients to help fight disease, green tea is known for its many therapeutic benefits. Studies have shown that green tea's active component called "epigallocatechin gallate" or EGCG to be very beneficial in treating cancers of the brain, prostate, cervix, and bladder. This magical antioxidant has also proven therapeutic for diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome, sjogren's syndrome, endometriosis, spinal muscular atrophy, neurodegeneration, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It can even help with weight loss.
Research has shown that ECGC may:
- increase metabolism and fat oxidation
- inhibit fat cell development
- increase the excretion of fat
Now you're probably wondering how much green tea you should drink in order to get enough ECGC to lose weight. Below you will find the benefits for one, two, and three cups of green tea per day.
A Medical Warning
One Cup for Blood Sugar Levels

Two Cups for Energy
Boost your metabolism! Two cups of green tea provides optimal dosages of important minerals like manganese, selenium, chromium, and zinc. However, it has also been proven to prolong norepinephrine, the fat burning accelerating hormone.
Boost your motivation to workout! Green tea also contains theanine, an amino acid, which has been shown to boost alertness. Unlike caffeine, theanine doesn't cause the jitters. Theanine can also help increase your brain's dopamine and serotonin levels. These neurotransmitters help the body and brain with correct behavior, cognition, memory, learning, motivation, mood, appetite, and sleep, They also help with voluntary movement which can keep your mind positively on your muscles.
Scientific studies have shown that just 30 minutes after drinking two cups of green tea, the endothelia cells that line your circulatory system dilate. In turn, your arteries and veins relax which allows proper blood flow and nutrient assimilation. Endothelial dysfunction can be reversed with drinking just two cups of green tea per day.
Green Tea Helpful Tips
- To extract additional fat burning EGCG, dunk your tea bags a few times before consuming.
- Add lemon and/or lime to help increase absorption as antioxidants can be lost through digestion.
- Just steep your tea bags once as they lose antioxidants after the second use.
Will you add green tea to your daily regimen now that you know the benefits?
Three Cups Burns Belly Fat
Lose 11 pounds of body fat! A scientific study reported that drinking three cups of green tea per day, mixed with a bit of low-fat milk, can burn 106 calories per day when drinking for three days in a row. Drink three cups of green tea for every day of the year, and that equates to 38,000 calories burned. That's 11 pounds of body fat burned!
Burn belly fat fast! The Journal of Nutritionreported that three cups of green tea combined with exercise burns abdominal fat. Results were shown after three months, but fat burning begins after the first three days of exercise.
Burn 17 percent more fat! Green tea's ECGC can help you blast more body fat during moderate intensity cardio exercise. The American Journal of Clinical Nutritionreported that fat burning increased by 17 percent during a 30-minute cycling test when 366 milligrams of EGCG was consumed.
You may know that strength training increases bone strength, but did you know that drinking green tea can strengthen your bones as well? Research has linked green tea's content (i.e., caffeine, phytoestrogens, and fluoride) to helping increase bone density. Studies followed subjects for 10 years who drank tea regularly.
Green tea is likely to be safe for most adults. However, more than five cups per day can cause a variety of symptoms such as mild to serious headaches, nervousness, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, tremors, heartburn, dizziness, ringing in the ears, convulsions, and confusion. This is possibly due to high caffeine intake. Green tea can also cause upset stomach and constipation in lower doses. It may also have interactions with certain prescription medications. Be sure to consult with your doctor before adding green tea to your daily diet if you are on any medications or are pregnant or lactating.
Now that you know the many benefits of green tea, will you add it to your daily regimen?
Tell Us What You Think
My weight is 47kg, but my belly looks big. I want to reduce my belly fat. I drink two cups of green tea a day. Is this enough?
Drinking green tea may help boost fat loss, but fat loss comes from much more than just drinking the tea. Your entire lifestyle plays a role. That includes what you eat and how much water you drink, as well as how much exercise, sleep, and rest you get. Stress also plays a role. Unfortunately, I do not know these factors, so I can't predict why your belly looks big.
Can I drink two green tea bag at once?
Sure. If you like your green tea stronger, that's perfectly your preference.
My weight is 101 kilograms, and I drink two cups of green tea. I want to lose 20 kilograms in two months, and I walk 2.5 hours every day. Is this enough green tea and exercise to help me lose weight?
Congratulations on making the decision for a healthier lifestyle. You are definitely on the right track. However, an overall healthy diet is important as well. Green tea and walking will definitely support your efforts, but please review my other articles to be sure you're eating the right type of foods.
I drink green tea before going to bed, and I take folic acid at the same time. Is this an effective routine for weight loss?
Green tea itself contains the natural form of folic acid called "folate." With that being said, there has been a study that green tea inhibited the absorption of the synthetic form of folic acid in the intestines. Could it be that folate is okay? If green tea contains folate, I would think that taking a natural folate supplement is fine. As far as a folic acid supplement, I wouldn't recommend taking it at all because it is artificial.
I'm 5' 2", and I weigh 150 pounds. Last summer, I weighed 130 pounds. I had my thyroid tested, and everything came back good. Please help. I need to lose weight. How much green tea do I need to drink to do this?
Green tea may boost your potential to lose weight. However, much more goes into the process of losing weight, such as a wholesome diet with the right calories for your body stats, as well as exercise and sleep. If you have a lot of stress in your life, that could also hold onto weight. Without knowing more about you and your lifestyle habits, I cannot direct you more. Please follow up with a knowledgeable nutritionist.
Is taking green tea OK with antidepressants and high blood pressure medicine?
Studies have shown green tea leads to a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms which is due to the polyphenols in the tea. Specifically, a Japanese study found that depressed people who drank four (4) or more cups of green tea were considerably less likely to show symptoms of depression. Prior studies also suggested that green tea drinking is linked to lower levels of psychological distress. Therefore, you may need to have your doctor decrease your antidepressant medication if you are feeling on par. However, antidepressants in the class of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) taken with green tea could cause blood pressure to rise rapidly which can be a dangerous situation.
Studies have shown that green tea can reduce blood pressure, as well as total and LDL cholesterol levels. If you're drinking the higher end (5-6 cups per day), a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure can result. Therefore, you may need your blood pressure meds reduced. If you decide to drink it, you may want to monitor your blood pressure several times per day (if you have a home monitor). If you notice a drop in blood pressure, contact your doctor so that he or she can reduce your dosage.
Since you are taking both antidepressants and blood pressure medications, I would recommend speaking with your doctor or pharmacist before drinking green tea. Since I don't know your complete health situation, your practitioner would know what is best for you.
I’m 5'3" tall, and I'm trying to lose weight by eating 1,500 calories and drinking four cups of green tea per day. Do do you think this is enough, and is it healthy to lose weight this way?
Drinking green tea isn't the only thing you need to do to lose weight. Nor is counting your calories. The "types" of foods you eat is extremely important for weight loss and health. You may want to consult with your nutritionist.
Since my first pregnancy, I've been struggling to lose stubborn abdominal fat. My second baby is here, and I am still having trouble losing abdominal fat! I can't go out jogging because I have no one to leave the baby with, I am still lactating, and my baby is just three months old. Isn't green tea the best option for me?
Green tea may boost fat loss as long as you’re eating a healthy diet and exercising. It is not a magic pill.

I weight 46 kg and my height is 154 cm. I exercise daily (cardio and weight lifting for 15 to 30 min). I drink one cup of green tea along with high carb foods or after dessert, so I drink one to two cups of green tea daily - in addition to red tea. Does this regimen helps me to lose or maintain weight?
Green tea is a great addition to exercise in helping with weight loss. However, diet is also extremely important. You may want to cut out high carb foods and desserts if your goal is weight loss.
