Coding for Kids - Hopscotch app on iOS/iPad
How to Use the Hopscotch App
Hopscotch is a coding app intended for kids as young as four years old. Its basic drag-and-drop blocks make it easier for struggling coders to understand the concept of code, while having fun!
Download Hopscotch. It’s available on all Apple devices. You cannot find it on the Google Play store. The app is free to download, and doesn’t take up that much storage. Download the app from .
Open up the app. When you first open Hopscotch, you will see a screen saying “Welcome to Hopscotch. Coding for kids”. On the bottom of your screen, you will see a button saying “Get started”. Click it.
Wait for the words “Are you a teacher or a parent?” to show up. Click on the option that is appropriate to you. If you are a kid, ask an adult to help you out.
Review the screen about subscriptions. An advertisement for the Hopscotch subscription will pop up. You will have to wait a few seconds to skip this. If you choose to get one, the subscription will enable you to make projects with your own photos, personalise your logo, and more! It does cost money.
Sign up to change your username. You will have an account with a random name chosen by a generator. To change it you will need to sign up. Press the settings button, which looks like a gear. Then press “Sign up”. Choose a password, and enter an email. You may also change your username.
Try the tutorials. If you have never used Hopscotch before, consider doing the video tutorials before starting a code project from scratch. These step-by-step tutorials will help you familiarise yourself with the friendly drag-and-drop block code Hopscotch uses.
- Some of the tutorials may be locked. To unlock the videos, get the subscription!
- You may also tweak the code when you’re done. It’s all about imagination and code in Hopscotch!
Remix other people’s projects.Tweak the code, improve it, and change it up.
Communicating with Other Users
Remix projects. The easiest way to communicate with other users is by remixing their project. Don’t do this on an actual coded project, though - it’s best to chat on a chat page.
Follow other users. If you choose to follow a user, all their projects will pop up in the “Following” tab.
