First, it was smoking hot model of the moment Gigi Hadid who felt the need to respond to Insta-critics. And now Kim Kardashian and Tyra Banks have both added their voices to the discussion.
Gigi bravely posted an open letter on Instagram last night after receiving dozens of comments from trolls calling her fat, criticising her signature walk and suggesting that she was only successful as a model because of her mother Yolanda Foster’s fame. For real.
The star, quite rightly, spoke up, stating that; ‘I represent a body image that wasn’t accepted in high fashion before, and I’m very lucky to be supported by the designers, stylists, and editors that I am: ones that know this is fashion, this is art; it can never stay the same. It’s 2015. But if you’re not one of those people, don’t take your anger out on me. Yes I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs, but I’m not asking for special treatment.’
‘Your mean comments don’t make me want to change my body, they don’t make me want to say no to the designers that ask me to be in their shows, and they definitely don’t change the designers’ opinions of me.’
Another supermodel, Tyra Banks, was quick to show her support, re-posting the letter and writing; ‘I haven’t met you yet @gigihadid but I FEEL you so much. Your words are powerful. Your words are necessary. Your words are vulnerable. Your words are real. Sending you love and hugs. From one model that had curves and a unique walk to another, Tyra.’
And, adding yet another strong voice to the conversation, Kim Kardashian has also spoken about changing body ideals in the fashion industry today, telling CNN Style; ‘It’s crazy to even think that [so many designers want me to sit front row at their shows]. My body type is not your typical model body type. It’s exciting that I feel that designers are seeing different body shapes and styles and willing to take that risk.’
So as the entire fashion industry becomes more diverse and open to change than ever before, let’s hope that the Insta-trolls soon catch on and catch up with three of the planet’s most celebrated figures (in all senses of the word).
