Midnight Run

Every year, my mother, her best friends and a slew of youth and church groups from Long Island get together to help the NYC homeless. Their efforts are part of a not-for-profit initiative called Midnight Run, based out of Dobbs Ferry, NY, where it all began with a group of homeless people at Presbyterian Church.

This past Saturday night, at around 11:15 p.m., Logan and I met up with the six-vehicle-long caravan at 59th and Lexington Avenue, their second stop of five throughout Manhattan, including Penn Station—a homeless haven. In each van were a number of volunteers and boxes filled with either clothes, bags (donated by Banana Republic), blankets, food, coffee (donated by Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts), etc. My van, also donated, was on toiletry duty. At each stop, everyone unloaded and set up shop on the sidewalk to form a sort of assembly line. Half the time, the homeless were lined and waiting, and the other half, we had to search. I woke one man from a dead sleep on a park bench to tell him, but for those who were awake, a mere mention of the words "Midnight Run" turned their heads quickly. "Run's out?" they said. "Where?" (Though, some stubbornly held their ground, cursed, kicked and impolitely refused. But we understood.) The most in-demand items, we learned, were razors, deodorant, toothpaste and, of course, "snacks."

But, picky some were: As I held up a tube of Colgate, one woman questioned the brand (maybe Crest would have been better). Even more surprising was how not homeless some of the homeless looked. We had to be careful who we offered toothbrushes to, as most of the volunteers had never met each other. As I scanned the stations while Logan befriended a war veteran named Leon, one helper unknowingly offered me a women's jacket (perhaps it's time for a new winter coat). Even through the frigid cold, spirits remained high all night, and new friends were made, achieving exactly what was meant to be achieved (according to the website): "Our goal is to forge a bond between housed and homeless people by establishing a foundation of sharing and caring from which solutions may evolve."

Not all charity lends immediate gratification to anyone involved, but in this particular instance, it did.
