Multiple Sclerosis and the Expectation Game

“Why don’t they understand?!” I hear many of us say over and over when it comes to family and friends and their expectations of us and our abilities.
Some close to us expect that we can and will do all of the wonderful things we used to, with not a step lost because of MS. Others say they understand but seem not to practice sympathy in their expectations.
Oftentimes we set ourselves up for this misunderstanding when we don’t set or project realistic expectations for ourselves.
I’m one week into a very (okay, ridiculously) full schedule of launching my book, Chef Interrupted. I’ve packed a quite a few things into this fortnight and, by example, have set expectations high for myself. In doing so, others involved in the process have stepped up and expected even more from me. Whose fault is that? I’d have to say, “Mine.”

At least I’ve also planned a good bit of down time and rest periods (as well as refilling a few prescriptions). Still, my schedule looks like a completely healthy and quite abled person’s. I seem to have forgotten that I’m actually disabled.
Off to another reading this evening. It is a great honor to help inform and raise awareness of our disease. It’s surprising how many people who have come to events thus far are there for the “Irish” aspect of the book or the “food” part (and a good few because of the photo of Sadie on the cover). These are the folks we are educating about MS.
So, away I go, and I hope you’ll start a conversation here than may spill over to those who expect as much from us as we do ourselves – sometimes feloniously.
Wishing you and your family the best of health.
