Style Spy: NYC Summer
When it comes to style, New York City and Los Angeles couldn’t be more different; while flip-flops and hippie prints reign over the west coast, New Yorkers are more partial to an all-black palette and a tailored silhouette. Given the 2,500 miles separating them, not to mention a distinctly different climate, it is hardly surprising that these two stylish cities have forged their own identities. For the second part of our Summer Style series, today’s Style Spy story focuses on four super-chic celebrity muses from America’s east coast, all well-equipped to educate us on New York’s summer-ready aesthetic.
A fleeting look at today’s modish muses reveals New York’s key summer trends: dark sunglasses, an array of stylish separates (pleated skirts and denim shorts are the bottoms du jour) and a chic palette of neutrals. With these key elements in mind, we’re hopping back across America to take an in-depth look at summer style in the Big Apple.
As one of Brooklyn’s better-known fashionistas, Michelle (far left) consistently pops up on the style radar thanks to her unfussy-yet-fashionable aesthetic. Back in May, Michelle was spotted in Tribeca sporting an ensemble that perfectly captures her laidback vibe – her espadrille sandals and slightly cat-eyed sunglasses give the outfit a vintage touch, but her edgy take on double-denim keeps the outfit feeling fresh and modern. If you’re ready to try this look, grab Rich & Skinny’s (.90, reduced from 2) and layer them underneath Velvet’s (2). Accessorize with a pair of 50s-inspired sunglasses, like Ray-Ban’s Caribbean Cat-Eye Sunglasses (9), and then throw on a pair of summer-ready espadrilles; we like Marc By Marc Jacobs’s (5.99, reduced from 5) and Jeffrey Campbell’s ().
While Whitney (second from left) was born and raised in California, her style has taken on a more refined and put together aesthetic since she made the move to New York in 2008. Although plenty of her signature quirky-meets-cool elements remain – we love this nautical-chic ensemble in particular – these days, Whitney’s style a definite Manhattan edge. If you love her look, you can’t go past Vanessa Bruno’s (0) or Lucca Couture’s Chiffon Nautical Tee (). Combine these pieces with Nine West’s (.99) and Max C London’s (.36) and you’re all set for a stylish east coast summer.
As one half of the world’s most stylish set of twins, Ashley (second from right) seemed an obvious pick for our foray into New York’s summer style. Her classic all-black combination is timeless and definitely attention-stealing, especially when paired with a great set of accessories like her two-tone ballet flats. For a similarly stylish ensemble, grab Asos’s (.11) and layer it under a lightweight top like Sparkle & Fade’s Roll-Cuff Open Cardigan () or Kimchi Blue’s New Pointelle Cardigan (.99). Accessorize with a pair of Pretty Ballerinas’s (6) and Proenza Schouler’s (5).
We’re wrapping things up today with Chloe (far right), a true New Yorker whose idiosyncratic style is often lauded for its effortlessness and devil-may-care attitude. Her simple-yet-stylish summer ensemble consists of two distinct elements that set her apart from the fashion crowd: her white tee-and-shorts combo gives the outfit a subtly sexy, fresh feel, which is balanced nicely with the tomboy-esque lace-up flats. To take a page out of Chloe’s book, try a pair of J Brand’s (3) with a graphic tee; we like Obey’s Pirate Radio Tee (.99) and Torn by Ronny Kobo’s (). Your outfit won’t be complete without a quirky pair of flats like Carvela’s (6).
