What Is Teveten (Eprosartan)?
Teveten is the brand name of the prescription drug eprosartan, which used to treat high blood pressure.
This medicine is also sometimes given to help treat heart failure or diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease in people with diabetes).
Teveten belongs to a class of drugs called angiotensin II receptor antagonists. It works by relaxing blood vessels.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Teveten in 1997. It's marketed by AbbVie Inc.
Teveten contains a black box warning because it may cause serious harm or death in an unborn baby if it's used during pregnancy.
Stop taking Teveten and tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during your treatment.
Before taking Teveten, tell your doctor if you have, or have ever had:
Also, let your doctor know if you have diabetes and are taking the medicine Tekturna (aliskiren) before starting on Teveten.
Don't take potassium or use salt substitutes while using Teveten unless your healthcare provider tells you to do so.
Tell your doctor you're using Teveten before having any type of medical test or surgery, including a dental procedure.
Excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, or dehydration may increase your risk of low blood pressure. Tell your doctor if you experience any of these conditions.
Use caution when exercising or spending time in hot weather.
Your doctor may recommend a diet and exercise plan while you're using this medicine. Follow these instructions carefully.
Teveten may be less effective in people of African descent. Talk to your healthcare provider if this is a concern.
Keep all appointments with your doctor and laboratory while taking Teveten. You'll need to undergo frequent tests, including blood pressure checks.
Pregnancy and Teveten
Teveten shouldn't be used during pregnancy.
Tell your doctor if you're pregnant, or might become pregnant, before starting on this medicine.
Use an effective form of birth control while taking Teveten.
It's not known whether Teveten could pass into breast milk or hurt a breastfeeding baby. Don't breastfeed while using this medicine.
Teveten Side Effects
Common Side Effects of Teveten
Let your doctor know if any of the following side effects become severe or don't go away:
- Mild dizziness
- Upper respiratory tract infection
- Mild stomach pain
- Mild joint pain
Serious Side Effects of Teveten
Tell your doctor right away if you experience any of the following serious side effects:
- Fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Change in amount of urine produced
- Fever, chills, or persistent sore throat
- Muscle pain or tenderness
- Swelling of the hands, ankles, or feet
- Severe dizziness or lightheadedness
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Signs of an allergic reaction, which may include rash, hives, difficulty breathing, hoarseness, tightness in the chest, or swelling of the face, mouth, lips, or tongue
Tell your doctor about all prescription, nonprescription, illegal, recreational, herbal, nutritional, or dietary drugs you're taking, especially those listed in the Teveten Warnings section above, and the following:
Teveten and Alcohol
Alcohol may increase the risk of certain side effects of Teveten.
Don't drink alcoholic beverages while taking Teveten without first talking to your doctor.
Teveten and Other Interactions
Teveten may cause dizziness or lightheadedness.
Don't drive, operate machinery, or perform other activities that require alertness until you know how this medicine affects you.
Teveten comes as a tablet to take by mouth, usually once or twice a day.
You can take Teveten with or without food.
Try to take this medicine around the same time each day.
Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully. Don't take more or less Teveten than is recommended.
Don't stop taking this drug without first talking to your doctor.
It may take a few weeks before you experience the full benefits of Teveten.
Symptoms of a Teveten overdose may include dizziness, or feeling like you might pass out.
If you suspect an overdose, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose of Teveten
If you miss a dose of Teveten, take it as soon as you remember.
But if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular medication schedule.
Don't take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
