How to determine the ripeness of onions in the garden

When harvesting onions, it is very important to catch the moment of maturity of the fruit, because if you harvest too early or be late with it, you can not hope that the harvest will last longer than two or three months. The fact is that immature vegetables have a loose husk and juicy neck, which is why microorganisms quickly attack the fruit and rotting of root crops. In overripe bulbs, the scales fly off, the roots begin to regrow, which also does not contribute to long-term storage of the crop. In both cases, the taste of vegetables leaves much to be desired, and the amount of nutrients in them is much less than that of ripe fruits.

It is easy to determine the maturity of the onion, and the easiest way to do this is visually - in fully ripe vegetables, the feathers lie on the ground and have a yellowish tint, the false stem softens, the culture flakes become saturated in color — yellow, red, purple, depending on the variety. A fully shrunken above-ground part is a sign of over-matured culture.

How to accelerate the ripening of onions

If more than 70 days have passed since planting, frost is not far off, but there are no signs of onion maturity, then ripening of vegetables should be accelerated. How to do it? The course of action is simple:

  • scrape soil from the vegetables so that the heads are only half in the ground;
  • carefully lift the ground under each bulb with a pitchfork and trim the roots of the crop a little;
  • stop watering. If there are rainy days, cover the harvest with a wrap.

When to remove a bow for storage - terms

Dates of onion harvesting depend on several factors - variety, weather conditions, soil fertility and can last from 70 to 90 days. For example, early varieties planted in mid-May, under favorable conditions, can be cleaned already in mid-July, optimally on Petrov day - July 12, late ones - not earlier than the beginning of August. The onion harvest periods in the Urals and in Siberia are similar to the harvest periods in central Russia and can occur from mid-July to mid-August — the warmer and drier the summer, the earlier the harvest and vice versa. However, if in central Russia it is possible to leave vegetables ripening until September, then in the Urals and in Siberia the deadline for harvesting is August 15-20.The fact is that after these dates in the regions can begin to rain.

Well, in general, in order for the onions to ripen before the deadlines for harvesting, it is necessary to plant varieties of vegetables that are bred for a specific region. For example, Volsk, Strigunovsky, Belovezhsky, Arzamas, Bowerus, Sturon, Black Prince are suitable for planting in central Russia, including those in the Moscow region, and others.

How to remove onions in storage for the winter

To keep the onion for a long time, it must be removed in dry weather. If the soil is heavy, then it is better to refrain from pulling the vegetables by the feathers, because there is a chance of damaging the neck of the heads, as a result of which the keeping quality of the crop will decrease. In this case, you should gently pitch the plants with a fork, then remove the heads from the ground, shake the soil off them, and then sort them out for maturity. Ripe vegetables should be laid out to dry (in a well-ventilated area), specimens with a thick neck should be collected in a basket and taken to the kitchen or pantry - they should be eaten in the coming month.

When the vegetables dry up (after 5-10 days), it is necessary to cut feathers at each bulb, leaving only 5-10 cm "tails", then either fold them into cardboard boxes or wooden boxes, or weave them into braids and hang them in a storeroom, in the kitchen.
